Episode 37 Show Notes

You can find episode 37 here and here.

I talk a bit about my beloved grandmother, who passed away on the 10th of October at the age of 86.

10731602_1480623292198051_580266697_n

She is 18 in this photograph, and looks so like me it is a little spooky. My father has been telling me for years that I strongly resemble how she looked as a young woman but I hadn’t seen any photographs until very recently. It is comforting and strange.

Mama

She is 84 in this picture. She was notoriously difficult to photograph, usually blinking. This photo is like magic to me: she is laughing while my husband is talking to her, she is wearing a silk shawl I knit and lent her for the occasion (my cousin/her grand-daughter’s wedding) and the hanging basket of petunia’s… well, they were a flower she always grew. The ring she is wearing is one my father bought her while traveling in the 1970’s, and the last time I saw her she insisted that I have it. The blurry figure in pink in the background is another cousin/grand-daughter, who was a bridesmaid. This paragraph is probably very disjointed, but I guess the point is this picture is perfect. I will finish by saying I wore the same shawl to her funeral and felt very close to her.

I talk about the hand-quilting on my Modern Medallion Quilt.

10727486_759456937424245_361096388_n

I quilted my Reece Scannel shot cotton rainbow quilt and the binding is underway.

10735056_791352370903452_1788598531_n

I’ve also graduated from project sacks to quilted, zippy project boxes. I followed the tutorial here.

10311026_1478969682380204_1092616890_n

I’ve been knitting very little, but my favourite project is the sock I am knitting from my own dyed yarn (bonus shot of quilted project bag too).

1389902_1565059607050867_808712494_n

I finished spinning the Wren and Ollie bump. It is soooo nice.

10731464_739606742787028_850262199_n

10735069_1477160869214090_435756086_n

I also spun some bulky singles that made me crave Neapolitan icecream for days.

10724673_354823238020618_1806096680_n

I talk about fixing the dye in some yarn I had in stash (not my dyeing, I hasten to add). I following (the knitmoregirls) Jasmin and Gigi’s method to great effect. Full instructions here, and while it is an extra step, my feeling is that if you just do it when you wash your knits for the first time it’s not a big job (and can save A LOT of trouble).

You have a week left to enter the giveaway – details in last set of show notes. I will draw on the 2nd November, and will podcast (even if it’s only 5 minutes!).

I also talk about my experiences with massdrop, and with total transparency tell you that if you follow my link and end up buying something, I could be rewarded with a gift. It is a rabbit hole, so be warned.

Peace out,

Ms Spider xo

Episode 5 Show Notes

Something is hinky with my RSS feed (which means episodes 4 and 5 have not yet appeared on iTunes!) – find the direct link here. ETA – fixed! Apparently we were failing to tick the box that says “publish as podcast” instead of “download only”. Ugh! iTunes is happy again.

In this early episode, I discuss swooping birds and crazy Spring weather.

(This is a visual for non-Aussies – not me being swooped. Imagine the shrieking accompanied by repeated attempts to remove one’s scalp).

I express my great relief in finishing my Cardigan of Doom (and my extreme joy in wearing the thing in said crazy Spring weather).

(I will attempt some better photos… on the other hand, admire my lovely knitted-look iphone cover from Smiggle!)

I plug aussieyarning’s Martina Behm KAL and wax lyrical about my Trillian in Cherry Tree Hill Supersock Merino (Quarry Hill). Doesn’t it look like the sample?

I also mention Fiona from Solar Flair Fibre‘s pretty yarn.

I complain about my sore neck/shoulder (which is, incidentally, much improved since I recorded).

I mention my brand new etsy store with excitement (and some trepidation!), and go on for a bit about the fun I’ve had with all the dyeing.

I express my excitement with an upcoming Sunday at the Boorowa Woolfest.

Peace out,

Ms Spider xo

Episode 4 Show Notes

Find Episode 4 on libsyn or itunes. For some reason, itunes hasn’t updated yet, so apologies if this is frustrating.

This episode, my geekery is full-flavoured and (mostly) unapologetic!

I rant for a bit about misconceptions around Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. I reference Arthur Brook’s The Tragicall History of Romeus and Juliet. This rant ends about 16 minutes in, if you want to skip to the knitting.

I spin some merino/possum from yarn vs zombies, and a Nunnaba art batt.ImageImage

I dye some self-striping sock yarn and some merino roving.Image

I progress on the sleeves of my blasted cardigan.Image

I talk about this pattern booklet for baby knitting: Leisure Arts #4577, Knit Lace & Leaves for Baby

I mention Joyce at aussieyarning again; Joyce’s special episode about Knit Camp is up, and if you’re interested you can see me spinning with my friend Kate at about 9:30 and see my interview at about 1:00:00. I’m really glad she did this – I got so overwhelmed by yarn fumes, I barely took 12 photos all weekend!

I also mention Anastasiamw of For the Knit of it who gave me a lovely review.

Peace out xox
