Episode 37 Show Notes

You can find episode 37 here and here.

I talk a bit about my beloved grandmother, who passed away on the 10th of October at the age of 86.

She is 18 in this photograph, and looks so like me it is a little spooky. My father has been telling me for years that I strongly resemble how she looked as a young woman but I hadn’t seen any photographs until very recently. It is comforting and strange.

Mama

She is 84 in this picture. She was notoriously difficult to photograph, usually blinking. This photo is like magic to me: she is laughing while my husband is talking to her, she is wearing a silk shawl I knit and lent her for the occasion (my cousin/her grand-daughter’s wedding) and the hanging basket of petunia’s… well, they were a flower she always grew. The ring she is wearing is one my father bought her while traveling in the 1970’s, and the last time I saw her she insisted that I have it. The blurry figure in pink in the background is another cousin/grand-daughter, who was a bridesmaid. This paragraph is probably very disjointed, but I guess the point is this picture is perfect. I will finish by saying I wore the same shawl to her funeral and felt very close to her.

I talk about the hand-quilting on my Modern Medallion Quilt.

I quilted my Reece Scannel shot cotton rainbow quilt and the binding is underway.

I’ve also graduated from project sacks to quilted, zippy project boxes. I followed the tutorial here.

I’ve been knitting very little, but my favourite project is the sock I am knitting from my own dyed yarn (bonus shot of quilted project bag too).

I finished spinning the Wren and Ollie bump. It is soooo nice.

I also spun some bulky singles that made me crave Neapolitan icecream for days.

I talk about fixing the dye in some yarn I had in stash (not my dyeing, I hasten to add). I following (the knitmoregirls) Jasmin and Gigi’s method to great effect. Full instructions here, and while it is an extra step, my feeling is that if you just do it when you wash your knits for the first time it’s not a big job (and can save A LOT of trouble).

You have a week left to enter the giveaway – details in last set of show notes. I will draw on the 2nd November, and will podcast (even if it’s only 5 minutes!).

I also talk about my experiences with massdrop, and with total transparency tell you that if you follow my link and end up buying something, I could be rewarded with a gift. It is a rabbit hole, so be warned.

Peace out,

Ms Spider xo
